How To Get The Right Mentor

How To Get The Right Mentor
Jul 13th 2020 by Crystal

This post is here to guide you, not necessarily the final say but to give you a clue on how to get it right. It's not impossible to get the right mentor. So i'll list how to get the right one...

  • How To Get The Right Mentor:

  • Don't Rush It: This is important. Understand that getting a mentor is not something you rush into. Just like I wrote in the previous post, understand why it is you need one and when that is established, pray about it. Ask God to send the right ones your way or show you how and where to find them. This decision will either make or mar you. So the first rule is you don't hurry into it, else you will hurry out of it. .

  • Take Your Time To Observe: When you've finally seen the person you admire and one that has the results you want to have, don't be in a hurry to let them know that you want to learn from them and grow. Take time to observe them. Personally, I try to see where they draw their values from. How they think and their approach to life in general. Because the person's way of life and thoughts can influence you a great deal more than you think.

NOTE; This might not be applicable when it comes to business or something official. The most important thing is that you MUST have a strong sense of who you are, your values and beliefs. That way you won't be wrongly influenced. A friend of mine has a business mentor that believes something different as concerning Religion. That doesn't stop him from learning some business ethics from his mentor.

One of the ways to know if you can connect with someone on a deeper level is when you hear them speak. "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks". Words are your thoughts. So when they speak you know how they think. This will help you a great deal, and can give you a hint of the kind of person you are going to be dealing with.

  • Make Your Intentions Known: After you've done the first two, then meet the person and let them know you want to diligently learn from them. Saying it is not a guarantee that you'll get the best out of that mentorship. However, saying it makes them aware of your intentions.

Some will tell you "they'll think about it". Some will tell you "No". Some will tell you "Yes" right there. If you get a No, understand that you are not the problem, the person is. It's possible the person is not ready to handle that kind of responsibility yet (Yes, mentorship is a huge responsibility). So what you do is sincerely appreciate the person for being truthful to you because some will tell you Yes and yet you can't access their knowledge or anything to help you grow. They become a liability to you instead of an asset.

If they tell you they'll think about it, go and pray one more time about it, if you really want to learn from this person. If the person says yes, then congratulations! You got yourself a mentor.

The main gist is that the person MUST consent to it!

Never beg someone to mentor you. They must be willing to teach you and help you grow. Of course, you have sorted yourself before deciding you needed a mentor.

Next week I'll talk about "How to get the best of mentorship". I know you got value. Please don't forget to comment and share. God Bless You.
